Restaurant review – Pizza Express, Belsize Park, London.

Who doesn’t like pizza? Not me. I love it. But we all know it can’t be an everyday indulgence. However, this week I found a place where you can have pizza satisfaction without the weight worry. Yes you heard me correctly and it’s right on the high street.

Because the world loves pizza but not calories Pizza Express have expanded their range of dishes to include some for fewer than 500 calories. Ten dishes are now available as part of the popular low calorie Leggera range and you can eat out on just 378 calories for two courses or 595 calories for 3 courses. There is also a light lunch menu with 17 yummy dishes under 500 calories, as well as gluten-free options for those who would prefer.

My friend Kate and I tried out my local Pizza Express restaurant to sample some of the newer, lighter options, and were super impressed. We started with couple of glasses of rose accompanied by some delicious roast tomatoes, not being a fan of olives, these hit the spot nicely. Then we both tucked into our Leggara pizzas. For those of you who don’t know, the Leggera Pizza is made with thinner, crispier Romana dough and has a hole in the middle filled with a lightly dressed, fresh salad. Being a veggie I had the Padana pizza that was generously topped with goats cheese, spinach and caramelised red onions, delish. Kate opted for the Sloppy Giuseppe that also came with oodles of topping. To accompany this (you have to have accompaniments… of course!) we had polenta chips and a chunky coleslaw. Delicious. And you really wouldn’t think it had so few calories.

pizza3There was definitely room for dessert so I (naturally) ordered the Chocolate Brownie – which also happens to be gluten-free – and my friend had the Lemon Meringue Torta accompanied by a healthy and refreshing cup of herbal tea.

pizza2It was such a nice feeling to walk away from three courses at a pizza restaurant feeling full but not bursting at the seams. It’s good to know that a high street restaurant chain can make food that tastes homemade and has clearly been created with a lot of care. Not to mention the no post-meal calorie guilt.

At Pizza Express you really can have your pizza and eat it!
