Festival of Imagination – Selfridges

Becky from Team DC went to check out Selfridges, Manchester – Festival of Imagination.

Across the country Selfridges are celebrating 2014 as the Festival of Imagination.  Events differ in their three stores – London, Manchester and Birmingham. In Manchester, Selfridges have joined forces with the Whitworth Museum, which has temporarily closed its doors for refurbishment.

Director of the Whitworth Art Gallery, Maria Balshaw, has curated a series of pop up events in the store.  There’s Picassos in store and inspirational talks from authors, playwrights and artists.

I was fortunate enough to attend the sold out “Conversation with” event or “The Writer’s Mind” as it was dubbed, where author Jeanette Winterson was in conversation with poet John McAuliffe.

The evening began with a lovely glass of wine and conversation with other attendees, followed by a taster menu in the San Carlo Farmacia Del Dolce cafe on the lower ground floor.  The mozzarella balls and bruschetta were a delicious welcome snack!

Then the main event with Jeanette Winterson, which provided some thought provoking and insightful food for thought about what, reading and writing mean to us.  How books have shaped us, and continue to shape us, as people.
