Vivo is a new, modern and vibrant bakery, restaurant and cafe located on the ever popular Upper Street in Islington. The creation of Ben and Will Thompson, Vivo offers regional Italian cuisine inspired by the travel experiences of the two brothers. What is evident from the food is that the finest and freshest ingredients have been sourced in order to turn this casual dining restaurant into a thoroughly recommended gastronomic journey.
Upon entering Vivo, the first thing that is immediately evident is the stunning 14 metre long foot counter that cannot be anything but centre of attention. This is really where Vivo are able to showcase their produce and ingredients, offering diners the chance to explore the modern twists on Italian classics. There is a counter dedicated to some delightful pizza and breads, an array of salads (with lots of components) and a section for hot dishes allowing all taste buds and fancies to be fulfilled. Everything on display in the counter is freshly prepared throughout the day and can be enjoyed at anytime – there is even a takeaway option for those people who cannot help but stop and stare as they pass by.
The dessert part of the counter was particularly impressive; each creation is incredibly beautiful and extremely appetising. Most of the desserts are almost too beautiful that it seemed a shame to devour them – but we did and they were delicious. Everything from lemon and celery cheesecake to tiramisu, limoncello and almond cake, gianduja and hazelnut tart and zeppole is on offer; we opted to try the millefoglie (and Itaian mille-feuille) and a chocolate torte.
We were, however, lucky enough to sample something from each counter – the pizzas were hearty, the salads were fresh, the side order of roasted butternut squash and potatoes were fantastic but the winner of the night was most definitely the aubergine lasagne which was rich in taste and the thing I have been craving ever since my visit.
