My Week – 17th October, 2013

I write this looking out from my hotel window at the Novotel, Darling Harbour in Sydney, I am also typing whilst looking at my stripy red and white arms after going out on a Captain Cook boat cruise from Darling Harbour, stopping for lunch in Watsons Bay and back again yesterday. Leaving a chilly autumnal London I made the schoolgirl error of dropping off my luggage and going out to enjoy some rays without thinking of sunscreen. Today I won’t make that mistake and will suffer the shame that stripy limbs bring. Cue catcalls of ‘look at the Brit, hahahahaha’.

I’m in Sydney to speak at the very first Office*show here – a trade show for PA’s and EA’s filled with training seminars, keynote talks and exhibitors following on from the hugely successful Office*show at Olympia in London which was last week. I also spoke at that one on ‘How to be a celebrity PA’ – it was a great day and I got to meet lots of PA’s who I know from Twitter but have never met before in real life. I was thrilled to be asked to speak there and to then to fly across the world and enjoy the comforts that British Airways Club World offers – seriously who would say no?! So I loaded up the Kindle with ‘Mad about the Boy’ – the next volume of Bridget Jones’ life by Helen Fielding and snuggled into my bed seat. Loads of room to stretch out, great food (even for one with dietary requirements…)plus attentive staff. We were delayed leaving Singapore due to the time change in Australia and a member of crew came and spoke to all of us personally to explain and check on our journey – now that’s customer service!

I’ve been out and about trying to add to my ‘Sydney Little Black Book’ too: Barney Martin Hair in Surry Hills, Bungalow 8 in Darling Harbour and The Bridge Room near Circular Quay to name a few, keep looking for new additions.

Prior to leaving we went to see Matilda the Musical – WOW! Isn’t it brilliant? Those children work so hard in it and were incredible – it was so funny, magical, clever, just brilliant, we loved it. I have been humming ‘When I grow up’ ever since; ‘When I grow up I will be brave enough to fight the creatures that you have to fight beneath the bed each night to be a grown up’. I hope I am.
