It’s the city that’s certainly feeling ‘hot, hot, hot’, but it’s also fashionista central, which means most New Yorkers are experts at solving the problem of how to combine looking stylish and business-like without overheating.
With so many New York designers including Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Vera Wang… oh and throw in the odd stylist like Patricia Field, the stylist for Sex in the City, and The Devil wears Prada, the outfit options are endless for these stylish folk.
I spotted on the streets of Manhattan a lot of beige, taupe and cocoa brown all in the guise of smart dresses, pencil skirts and a lot of short short suits, with heels and fantastic legs! (I also spotted someone in a swimsuit and 3 people in wellies but I’ll leave it up to you to decide how good a look that is).
From Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman and Bloomies to Nine West and Banana Republic (before you’ve walked around Greenwich Village and Soho), there are so many great stores in this city all bursting with ideas for you to recreate yourself. Read on for some inspiration:
Business lunch meeting
This simple dress from Ann Taylor is perfect for a business lunch meeting: it’s a great colour (ground ginger) and the oversized tie front waist is a flattering detail. Wear with these ASOS Hacienda leather wedges and throw this gorgeous Anya Hindmarch Tiny Tim bag over your arm and you’re ready to go.
Evening cocktails with the girls
Have you thought about… how to change your office outfit through to evening?
- Add a ‘pop’ of colour to lift your outfit. Use your business suit as a base but swap your shirt for a brightly coloured cami, or add a colourful scarf and handbag so your look is refreshed.
- Change your ballet flats for heels.
- Turn up your jacket sleeves and add bangles, a statement watch and beads or a string of pearls. Simple, but effective.
- Shake your hair out, a lick of red lipstick and freshen up your mascara – MEOW!
